One of the most amazing aspects of my job is the opportunity to look at handbags in showrooms. It is triple the delight when the bags we are looking at are months away from being available to the general public. If you asked me five years ago what I would be doing today, this would not be on my list. But I am beyond thrilled it is.

Visiting the Bottega Veneta showroom was a highlight of our NYC trip. Just as we arrived in the showroom, we were greeted by a fresh set of Spring 2010 handbags. The bags had only been seen previously on the runway in Milan a week prior. Now it was our turn to examine them closely in all of their glory.

When you look at a Bottega Veneta bag, one of the main aspects that intrigues me (and should be taken into consideration by any buyer) is how exactly the bag was made. Tomas Maier and the Bottega Veneta team continue to go above and beyond when creating their pieces. There is a story behind every item, every color, every technique, and every material. Now if we could have the pleasure of sitting down with Tomas Maier to see into his vision our lives would be complete. We can dream, right?

Cruise show season is kind of odd – instead of having a proper Fashion Week where all of the collections are presented together, they’re released slowly in shows around America and Europe, each with very different backdrops and moods. For example, Chanel, a brand that always shows at Paris Fashion Week, chose to present its Cruise collection this year on a Venice boardwalk.

Louis Vuitton, another house that traditionally shows in Paris, didn’t have a real show at all – instead, the clothes were presented as we see them here. It’s a more understated choice for a more informal season and smaller collection, but that doesn’t mean the sailor-and-pinup-inspired clothes and accessories are any less exciting. In fact, they’re refreshingly clean and pretty, but with just enough 80s urban influence to put Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs’ signature spin on the retro looks.

Last Spring I introduced to Bag Bliss the Beirn Jenna Tote. The brightly colored watersnake skin tote offered an inexpensive alternative to those handbag enthusiasts interested in having an exotic handbag. Not to mention the colors were to die for! Remember Sarah Jessica Parker’s orange version? Wowza! It seemed like everyone was in love with that bag! Well I just came across a new style from Beirn (pronounced “burn”) while browsing the Bloomingdale’s website today. Introducing the Beirn Ruthie Large Tote! This lovely tote features rolled double handles that have been threaded through the top portion of the bag and drawn together into a circular shape, resulting in a gentle gathering of material. I think the scrunching accents the exotic texture very nicely, giving this bag a very glamorous feeling. Plus I really like the glossy look of the Black version. It really adds to that glamor vibe. This bag would be perfect for this Fall/Winter season, as I hear exotics are going to be hot again. This beauty is definitely worth checking out. And since it is relatively inexpensive compared to other exotics out there, you won’t need to feel guilty once the “trend” has faded.

Who doesn’t love options? I was approached by a sales associate at my local Saks outlet and was asked if I had seen their latest arrival, the two-in-one handbag (she must have barely spotted them). I was familiar with the style since a couple of tBFers proudly own the famous City Tote by Foley + Corinna, but I hadn’t experienced what a great style it was in person.

Our friends at ShopBop and their wonderful sales have both the City Tote by Foley + Corinna and the Post Q Tote by Un Apres-Midi de Chien marked down in the sales section (only selected colors on the City Tote). This is just one of the many examples of designer inspirations and competition.

Foley + Corinna with its original design features a zipper up front when expanded and nice pebbled leather, while Apres-Midi’s version consists of bubbly nylon and faux patent leather trim. From pure description it’s quick to note that one style definitely differs in price wise than the other. Both feature double rolled handles, multiple pockets and the handy detachable shoulder straps. Since I’m not the greatest fan of nylon handbags, my vote goes to the original City Tote. Which is your pick?

Between the half-shoes/half-claws shown by Alexander McQueen and Chanel Spring 2010 being show in a barn with smirking models, I thought I had seen every ridiculous thing that Paris Fashion Week had to offer.

And then at Louis Vuitton Spring 2010, creative director Marc Jacobs saw fit to attach furry tails to the bags. Yep, that happened.

As far as bags go, the show started…dreadfully. Most of them appeared to be made of dip-dyed cotton canvas in candy colors with coordinating fluffy appendages streaming off the back, which were sometimes bigger than the bag itself. After a dozen looks, I thought I was in for a very unpleasant show.

But after a little while, things started to look decidedly better. I’m not sure if it was just the fashion show version of Stockholm Syndrome, I guess that’s always possible, but things rallied a bit during the middle and end portions of the show. Instead of canvas bags with animal parts hanging from them, Vuitton returned to the leathers and embossed logos to which fans are slightly more accustomed.

Which is not to say the bags were boring – they weren’t. The opposite, in fact. And they weren’t entirely successful, but I appreciate the combination of colors, materials, and textures that Jacobs attempted in order to make something new out of one of the most recognizable logos in the fashion world. The collection was heavy on messengers, and the ones that combined logo leather with smooth in different colors were probably the best bags of the show, in addition to the duffel bags made of similar textures. Please, Marc Jacobs, if you’re out there: please give the tassel-covered bags a rest. Thanks.

As the holiday season approaches, many retailers have been coming up with new and improved ways to make shopping fun again during these tough financial times. Online auction site and webstore, eBay, is at the helm of these new innovations with its brand new line of mobile boutiques. Like a little store on wheels, eBay has stocked these retail trailers with a wide assortment of items offered on the site—from fashion to toys to electronics—and is set to unveil them throughout 13 cities in the U.S. over the next couple months, starting incidentally, with Chicago. eBay also has plans to open up a pop up shop, the first official retail space for the company, in New York City from November 20th to 29th.

For the official unveiling of Chicago’s mobile boutique yesterday (parked in front of the Wrigley building on Michigan Avenue next to the Chicago River), I had the special treat of speaking withebay’s style director, Constance White. Constance was kind enough to lead me through the set up of the trailer. The carefully chosen selection of items within the mobile boutique was divided into sections of interest to allow for an easier perusing process. Customers could check out featured items such as L.A.M.B. shoes for a ‘Fashionista’, a high tech cell phone ‘Urbanite’, or a new controller for a ‘Gamer’. The eBay prices of each item were also listed to compare to the regular retail value and, sure enough, it was an impressive difference! The trailer also came equipped with computers for guests to find the items they already saw on the eBay site. Throughout the holiday season, the company plans to feature online specials such as ‘Daily Deals’ where popular items are showcased for less, and ‘Stocking Stuffer Mondays’ which will feature an item specially priced at under $10 with free shipping. Eager to find out more, I wasted little time in asking Constance how these ideas all came to fruition.

SCS: This year, more and more retailers, from designer labels to fast fashion, have been using pop up shops and other temporary retail outposts for exclusive access to their products. Why did eBay decide to get on board for the holidays?

CW: Well, as an online shopping site we really wanted to bring our products to the customers and show the depth and the breadth of our selection. Any given day, we have literally millions of listings, so we thought it would be important to take a sample of the incredible variety of items that we offer and bring it to the consumers for them to see and touch and experience. Our products range from new to gently used to vintage so we really feel like we have something for everyone thisholiday season.

SCS: Where did the idea come from to divide the selection of products into specific areas of interest?

CW: Well, we realized that most people this year are going to be looking for gift giving ideas that really emphasize value, instead of cost. eBay actually conducted a survey to a random number of consumers about holiday gift giving ideas and the majority said that it’s not as important to buy something expensive, as it is to find something with meaning and personal value. So our focus for this year’s gift selection is really on the receiver. Who is this person you’re shopping for? What types of things do they like? Sometime our selection can be overwhelming so we’ve  actually made it easy to answer those questions through these little categories: Styleista, Fashionista, Urbanite, Kid or even Kid at Heart for our great selection of toys! This way at least there’s a wealth of options in figuring out what to choose that’s meaningful, affordable, and something that the person you’re shopping for will truly enjoy.
