Madonna, daughter Lourdes team up for fashion

The platinum-selling platinum blond and her own daughter, Lourdes, collaborated on a fashion line for teenage girls that debuts this August exclusively at Macy’s.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer – known as much for her outrageous fashion sense as her nine Grammy Awards – will roll out the line just in time for back-to-school shopping.

The “Material Girl” collection – clothing, footwear, handbags and jewelry – will initially be available only at 200 Macy’s stores and online.

It’s a new world for Madonna to conquer after selling more than 200 million albums on her way to international stardom.

The 51-year-old singer recently finished her “Sticky and Sweet” tour, playing to soldout audiences around the globe.

According to a news release, Lourdes, 13, helped her Material Mom create the fashion line in connection with Madonna’s partners at Iconix Brand Group Inc.

“We look forward to working with Madonna, Lourdes and the Iconix team,” said Jeff Gennette, Macy’s chief merchandising officer. “Madonna is a fashion icon who can bring a new dimension to our juniors customer.”

Under the deal with Macy’s, the retail giant can launch additional brands with Madonna and Iconix. Read more…

Making Of GUCCI Handbags: Jackie, Bamboo

Gucci’s new ad campaign focuses on two words aimed at capturing both the brand’s heritage and the future as the fashion house gets set to celebrate its 90th anniversary next year: Forever Now.

The worldwide campaign is composed of two black-and-white images from the Fifties portraying apron-clad workers painstakingly lopping hides, with swatches of leathers hanging from the wall at the house’s Florentine factory on Via delle Caldaie. “Ninety years of history and tradition are incorporated in many Gucci products, but we felt the urge to better divulge the message to our millions of consumers that aren’t necessarily aware of it,” said Patrizio di Marco, chief executive officer of Gucci Group.

In addition, creative director Frida Giannini is reinterpreting the house’s past. Besides iconic motifs such as the double G logo, the horsebit and the red and green ribbon, Giannini has relaunched the “Diamante” pattern, a graphic motif introduced at the brand’s men’s show in January. The pattern stems from the Thirties when a scarcity of leather led company founder Guccio Gucci to dabble with printed canvas. Read more…

Dance review: Los Angeles Ballet’s Balanchine program

6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8c4aa5a970b-500wi

Los Angeles Ballet entered a new phase this weekend, its dancers showing increasing mastery with a repertory that, while familiar, is unforgiving.

The company opened its fourth season at Freud Playhouse by adding pieces of 20th century master George Balanchine — LAB’s choreographic foundation – by debuting his “Kammermusik No. 2” and “Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2.”

A new season meant greeting new faces (Carrie Lee Riggins, formerly with New York City Ballet) and missing those who have left (notably soloist Corina Gill). There’s no mistaking that this young ensemble is growing progressively more cohesive. “Serenade” (1935), which L.A. Ballet performed in its inaugural season, sparkled particularly with elegance and poignancy.

“Kammermusik No. 2” (1978) is Balanchine of another dimension. Its two lead couples and eight male corps members need the rhythmic instincts of jazz musicians to amply express Paul Hindemith’s jagged score for piano and orchestra. It has syncopated timing and a whirligig vocabulary of jogging, helicopter arms, and flexed feet. “Inhuman, desperate, slightly repellent,” Lincoln Kirstein, New York City Ballet co-founder, called it – perhaps anticipating how dancers might feel tackling it.

The faces of Sunday’s cast betrayed no such negative thoughts, though their bodies were tentative. The work has yet to jell. Only Grace McLoughlin beamed delightedly, undaunted, bounding in her solo of gawky knees-up hops and gangly kicks. Drew Grant matched her enthusiasm but not her stamina. Melissa Barak, who bloomed as the Waltz Girl in “Serenade,” withdrew into small movements. Paired with Andrew Brader, flashes of tenderness suggested an enticing duet will come from them eventually.

“Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2” is the 1973 revision of Balanchine’s “Ballet Imperial” (1941), which celebrated the classical tradition of Tchaikovsky, Petipa and 19th century St. Petersburg. The later version is less elaborate, but still a ballet of gorgeous filigrees. Read more…

Alexa handbag joy for Mulberry

Mulberry to upgrade its full-year expectations.

Established in Somerset in 1971, Mulberry benefits from its positioning as a luxury brand that offers more affordable prices than some peers.

An Alexa shoulder bag costs £695 ($1,089), attracting consumers who want to splash out on a designer label accessory but who shy away from handbags priced at more than £1,000 that are offered by other premium labels.

“I think we have a balance of design, quality and price that’s hitting the spot,” said Godfrey Davis, chairman and chief executive.

Strong demand for the Alexa handbag, inspired by the young British style icon Alexa Chung, prompted
“We’re aiming to offer a luxury product with all the characteristics of other luxury brands … but our prices, though not inexpensive, are relatively affordable.”

Mulberry said the outlook had strengthened as a result of a strong Christmas and demand from both retail and wholesale customers for the Alexa range. Results for the year to March 31 would be “significantly ahead of market expectations”, it said.
Analysts were previously forecasting pre-tax profit of £4.8m, from sales of £66m. David O’Brien at Altium Securities, the company’s broker, upgraded his forecasts to pre-tax profit of £6m from sales of £69.5m.
Earnings per share are forecast at 7p, up from 5.5p. Mr O’Brien forecast net cash of £11m at the year-end, up from £3.7m the previous year. Read more…

21 Things I Learned in My 21st Year

We’ve teamed up with our friends at College Candy to bring you one of their articles each week! Since we cover college style and they cover college life, it’s a best of both worlds situation. You’ll also see CF posts on College Candy! Kind of amazing, no?

One word of warning: some readers found some of CollegeCandy’s ads and content to be NSFW – thought we’d let you know beforehand to avoid any surprises!

Woman reading a blue book

Just last February, I was planning my 21st birthday party. Now, I’m facing 22 (or as I like to call it 21+1) straight on. Even though the last twelve months have gone by, it feels like just yesterday I was indulging in jello shots and margaritas. For my 21st. Because just yesterday I was indulging in jello shots and margaritas.

Looking back, though, much has happened in the past year. It seems I’ve learned a lot while Ke$ha put a dollar sign in her name and started brushing her teeth with a “bottle of Jack,” John Mayer proclaimed that he is on the search for “the Joshua Tree of vaginas,” and the Jersey Shore became a national phenomenon.

So here (in no particular order) is what I know for certain after turning 21. Perhaps you youngsters can take a few things from this:

1. Friendships should make you happy — not pissed off : Friends should be so much more than people you dance on tables with and dish about the weekend to. They should be there for you, and you should be there for them. They also should not steal your alcohol on your 21st birthday and make out with the fraternity guy, all while puking as your boyfriend helps take care of them.

2. Raincoats are amazing: They are often understated and overwhelmingly overlooked when it comes to fashion. But even if they aren’t fashionable, really, you can’t complain when that slicker keeps your from frizzing. Without a rain jacket I wouldn’t have made it through the summer in London. And I think it actually kept me going to class this past semester. Why didn’t I realize this sooner? It doesn’t matter if you have a basic from Lands End or a super sexy trench from Dillards, just get one!

3. Go to the gym: Surprisingly enough, it is worth your time. Who knew? I sure didn’t, until I started going religiously with my boyfriend back in September. If you actually go to the gym and do more than hang out on the treadmill and elliptical for thirty minutes, you can see results. Plus, it teaches you patience on so many different levels.

4. Do not drink MD 20/20: Even if the frat-mixed mojitos are watered down and tasting a bit like a dirty dance floor, stay away from the MD.

5. Do experience a Pimms with Lemonade: Although you probably have never heard of this drink before, Pimms with Lemonade is a London pub staple. The Pimms is to Wimbledon, as the mint julep is to the Kentucky Derby. This fresh tasting, fruity cocktail will may be enough to convince you to study abroad for a semester. It’s to die for. Purse Blog’s Meaghan Mahoney Dusil Has 70 Handbags

If your handbag collection is growing so large that it needs its own closet…if you’ve been known to spend an entire paycheck on one amazing little tote…if you’d rather brown bag your lunch every day for a year to get your hands on the new Fendi must-have…then you and Meaghan Mahoney Dusil, founder and editor of PurseBlog, are going to be fast friends. Meet our latest Blogging Babe, after the jump.

1222meaghan-purse-blog_fa.jpg

STF: What made you decide to start a blog devoted entirely to handbags? Were you ever worried that you wouldn’t be able to come up with enough stuff to talk about nothing but purses?
MMD: I never imagined PurseBlog would become my full-time job. I always loved handbags and when the blog world was in its infancy, Vlad (my business partner and husband) suggested I start a blog. Handbags were the clear choice. In the beginning I struggled with finding enough information to cover. Now the goal is to find something that will engage readers on a daily basis. We have exclusives, sneak peeks, one of a kind photography, and giveaways, but we are always looking for more.

STF: What was the first handbag you ever bought? The most memorable?
MMD: The Coach Signature Demi Pouch is the first handbag I remember begging for and receiving from my parents. It is safe to say that Coach bag only further fueled my love of handbags. My most memorable purchase was my Hermes Blue Jean Birkin. This was my ultimate holy grail. After I bought this bag in NYC, we couldn’t find a taxi to take us back to our hotel. I remember riding on the subway and staring at my huge orange shopping bag. By the end of the ride I had a stomach ache over the amount of money I just spent on this bag. I can still remember what I wore and how I felt that day. Read more…

Smart Tips on Looking And Feeling Young

Are you aware of any way by which one can get back one’s younger days? Maybe the only established and elementary method is to entertain a feeling of continual contentment within oneself. This can be achieved through mental and the natural training, and also by a mix of both. A more popular option is to go for extensive beauty therapy or aesthetic operations, which could possibly make the lines vanish, and the age-related fat to go away. Few of the other integral ways to remain content with oneself are discussed below so read on and know how to find your youth with out having to go through cost-prohibitive beauty treatments.

An easy way to feel satisfied is to uplift the life force, which lies within each of us, and begin to feel confident about ourselves. This can be achieved through natural ways, like going for a pedicure or facials, which better your overall appearance. What are you accomplishing when you better your looks? You are making yourself more acceptable to others before you accept yourself.

But when you feel good about yourself both mentally and intellectually, the feeling of contentment, which you get, can never be substituted by ways like uplifting your looks, etc. When your mind is calm and you are at peace with yourself, you live in harmony with the environment and this automatically results in a stress-free existence. Such individuals can tackle life better taking all its ups and downs in his or her stride and naturally this shows in the way he or she ages, more in harmony with the natural aging process than most others.
